We can join as a member, probably via the ORCID US consortium which gets us
the highest level of API access.  It costs about $5K/yr.

With respect to dead email addresses, it looks like you can add any address you want to
your profile.  There's a validated flag which it sets when you click on a link they send
to the address.  If the address is dead, they can't validate it, but it's still in your
profile.

There are ways for a member to update its authors' profiles but the description of what permissions
you need to do what are somewhat obscure.  I'd guess it involves something like getting the author
to provide an OAUTH token via some interaction on the member's (i.e. the IETF's) web site.
