I suspect the venue is cheaper in the summer.
If so, that's only one of the many factors that have to be taken into account by the secretariat. For instance, T&Cs from the earlier COVID cancellation, availability of room and meeting space, etc. Just trust the secretariat to evaluate these considerations and make the right (or least worst) choice. We shouldn't even try to micro-manage how/when venues are booked and leave it to the experts.
Does the meeting selection doc say anything about typical temperatures in the candidate city for selection? If not, it probably should.
Since venues are booked 1-2 years in advance, nobody can say for sure how cold/hot/sunny/humid it will be that far ahead. [Except Glasgow where it's cold and rainy all year long. :-)] Besides, we're supposed to be inside an air-conditioned hotel while the meeting is in progress. It shouldn't matter what the weather's like outside. :-)
Everyone can make their own decisions about physical attendance based on the criteria and priorities that matter to them. The IETF can't possibly do that for each of us. |
