The heat is setting records in Europe.  The hottest ever first day at the Wimbledon tennis.

 

Madrid in July was always an interesting choice.  Hydration is so important; my best wishes to anyone braving the meeting.

The hotel is located in the northern part of the city, which can mean 3-5C average colder temperatures.

Hi,

Just wanted to mention that Europe is currently going through a serious heat
wave, easily the most severe one I have ever seen. I think it also qualifies as
the most severe since measurements began.

Last week (between 16-24 June), I was in northern Portugal. While there, and
despite my young age and comparatively forgiving location on the peninsula, I
had multiple heat strokes and on one walk with my partner, even had my mind go
completely blank from the heat. It was a well-known route, yet I couldn't
remember any of it when she asked at the time.

My age is quite young, at 28 likely among the youngest to be participating in
the IETF. This is in stark contrast with the smarter, and more importantly
older members I sometimes read about on their Wikipedia and Datatracker pages.
If you are in your senior years and intend to go in person, please consider if
you can attend remotely. The temperatures in northern Portugal were
consistently above 30C, peaking at 38. In Madrid, this will be higher. So far,
it seems that it will remain around the 40C mark, with even 45 already being
reported elsewhere in Spain. I don't think it's a stretch to consider those
deadly.

Organizers, please do everything you can to accommodate for the heat.
Especially in the afternoon, there should be no reason for anyone to be
outside or away from at least fans and a steady water supply. As far as I
know, the tap water in Spain is potable. Whatever you do, I don't want to be
responsible for people dying. It happens at festivals here in Belgium too,
large events.. are just like that sometimes, especially in extreme heat.
