I remember when my L1A was up for renewal and I was told that it had to be done in my ‘home’ country and could take an indeterminant time and had a risk of being denied meaning we could not be sure of a return to the US. Given that our house in the UK had been rented out, we had children in school in the US, life and jobs in the US, etc., that seemed a singularly unhelpful method of control and not overly friendly or welcoming.
Thats is about right. The CBP officers have always been difficult and depending on which port of entry, you get very different treatment. One thing people may want to consider is entering via Canada as the Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal airports have pre-clearance.
I think that is kind of missing the point which is not so much the likelihood of issues as the fact that they are a concern at all.
I spent several hours on Wednesday and Thursday responding to the dozen people who expressed concern to me about my safety.
I took the decision that this was far too risky a pursuit even back in 2016 and immediately started planning a return to the UK – I can only imagine how overzealous these apparatchiks have become now that they’ve been given unbridled nastiness...
Just like a randome police force, there are some "overzealous" agents which can make life difficult. Too much power at the PoE to make poor / bad calls.
The real issue is that these are not random acts by overzealous individuals, they are being actively encouraged by the head of government.
I am planning to attend IETF 127 if still in the country. The only change I expect to make to my plans is staying at the IETF hotel rather than the St. Francis. I have cancelled my reservation for room 1219.
Things are likely to be very different by November 2026. Not least because the US is scheduled to hold the world's second largest sporting event earlier that year followed by the largest in 2028.
Remember that all the contract with the hotel requires is filling the hotel rooms and buying food, we can easily move IETF meeting business online for a meeting if needed. We could easily fill the hotel with a locally focused non-standards making event
