The seminar will take place in two parts on the 7th July at 15:00 CEST and 8 th July at 11:00 CEST at the Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e Geoambientali, University of Bari, Aula Magna. The seminar can be attended from remote via Microsoft Teams using the links provided below. It introduces the conceptual foundations of texture, granulometry, shape, and fabric, highlighting their relevance for interpreting transport and depositional processes. Classical methods such as sieving and sedimentation are reviewed, with details on their principles, applications, and limitations. Advanced techniques based on digital image analysis, such as stereology and modal analysis, are then explored. These methods enable remote and automated texture measurement. Technologies developed at the LAIMA laboratory are presented, including the LROG (Laser Remote Optical Granulometry) system and its adaptation for use with drones (UAVs), which enable the acquisition of vertical grain size profiles and detailed maps of inaccessible or consolidated outcrops. Technical aspects, such as image segmentation, algorithm implementation, and integrating grain size scales to produce complete distributions, are discussed. Real-world examples are shown, such as the La Lumbre lahar case study, and the course includes a hands-on session to apply the presented methodologies. This presentation combines theoretical foundations, technological innovation, and practical applications, providing modern tools for textural characterization in sedimentary geology and volcanology.
