2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: "Lavallée, Yan" <Yan.Lavallee@xxxxxx> *Magmas and their Volcanic Products* We are pleased to announce the upcoming workshop on MAGMAS AND THEIR VOLCANIC PRODUCTS to be held at LMU-Munich (Germany) on 21 â?? 25 July, 2025. The workshop will cover the following topics: 1. Melt structure and dynamics 2. Melt thermodynamics and equations of state 3. Multiphase magma rheology and deformation mechanisms 4. Volcanic rock thermo-mechanics 5. Material rupture and fragmentation 6. Designing a successful experimental programme (incl. sample selection, preparation and characterisation; apparatus calibration, experimental protocol, and numerical validation) The course will comprise lectures, lab tours, and round table discussions on experimental programme development. During the lectures, we will present the *state-of-the-art o*n the properties of melts, glasses, magmas and volcanic products, and their relation to magmatic and volcanic processes. During the lab tours, we will introduce a wide range of analytical and experimental techniques and sample analysis (see below). The lab tours and round table discussions will allow for ample time to discuss open questions and develop potential scientific collaborations. We also encourage participants to bring ideas and queries for discussion. The course will introduce the following apparatus and methods: · Sample characterisation (pycnometry, BET, permeability, ultrasonic velocity) · Thermal analysis (calorimetry, dilatometry) · Viscometry (concentric cylinder, micro-penetration, torsion, parallel-plate methods) · Petrological experiments (cold seal pressure vessels, autoclaves, piston cylinder) · Deformation experiments (uniaxial, biaxial and triaxial presses, impact drop tower, rotary shear apparatus) · Magma fragmentation (shock-tube apparatus, volcanic ballistic cannon) · Monitoring (micro-seismicity, electrical measurements, seismicity, infrasound) The course is aimed at post-graduate students, early career researchers and experienced academics, with some background of silicate melts as well as magmatic and volcanic processes. The course will be taught by leading experts in laboratory experiments and analyses, including (not exclusively): Yan Lavallée, Donald Dingwell, Bettina Scheu, Ulrich Küppers, Jackie Kendrick, Kai-Uwe Hess, Corrado Cimarelli, Fabian Wadsworth, Anthony Lamur, Paul Wallace, Janine Birnbaum, Daniel Weidendorfer and Philip Benson. Participation will incur a registration fee dependent upon career stage, which covers course materials, coffee, tea and biscuits as well as an icebreaker dinner on Monday evening. Registration fees: · BSc / MSc student: â?¬75 · PhD student: â?¬150 · Post-Doctoral researcher: â?¬300 · Academic staff (lecturer â?? professor): â?¬400 · Employee in industry: â?¬600 Please be advised that travel and housing are not included in the registration fee.
