The three machines that I tried `irqtop` on all have some form
of Linux Mint 21 installed.  One of the machines has several
partitions, holding other distros.  Trying those, things work
fine on Fedora 40, Debian 12, Mint 18, and Manjaro.

During the upgrade process of one of the machines to Mint 22,
I kept running ./irqtop now and then (having a suspicion),
and noticed that after the upgrade of libncurses, ./irqtop
worked correctly.

To verify, I built and installed a recent ncurses locally on
this Mint 21 machine, and ./irqtop then worked fine. After
a 'make uninstall' of that recent ncurses, ./irqtop showed
"(null)" again on a small terminal.

Sorry for the false alarm.
