They're a US non-profit incorporated in Delaware with an office in Maryland. Their annual budget, from their Form 990, is about $5 million.
They have over a thousand members, including the IEEE, ACM, and every university you ever heard of including many in Europe.
I also get the impression that the IETF/LLC ought to making a contribution to ORCID if we are going to use it on a day-to-day basis.
Their membership structure is impressively complicated. We could join directly as a member, or via a consortium of similiar organizations, most likely ORCID US https://orcidus.lyrasis.org/.
Either way it costs about $5000/yr but via the consortium you get access to more features including the lookup API.
