This particular anecdote was very likely about Doom’s fast inverse square root code, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_inverse_square_root. I’m sure you’d agree that there are many other use cases where one would need to compute 1/sqrt(x). Ending up with an exact copy of the Doom implementation really isn’t great from a copyright and license compliance point of view.
