While it’s true that Aspell isn’t terribly active upstream, it does have a
release cadence in recent years similar to that of Hunspell, so I feel its
problems are perhaps exaggerated.

In any case, probably best to prefer enchant2 if you can, which will select
the best backend available for a given language.
