Likewise, what did the command say after you issued it?  

And what's in the system logs?

Out of curiosity, does suspend work?

I don't hibernate (well *I* do, but my computer doesn't), I do suspend.
And suspend is working for me, though that's Fedora 42 on a desktop PC,
with the server install, and Mate desktop environment installed on top
(I haven't done a Mate spin ISO install for a long time, because my PC
wouldn't boot the install for me, and the server ISO does include some
useful things).

In the past, and it may still be the case, you need to set up a swap
space (or swap file) to be able to hibernate.  There isn't one set up
by default for you.
