I think there were a variety of reasons, only some applicable to some people. The top ones that spring to mind: If it's there in the standard repo, it's immediately available without having to figure out that you needed to add another repo, and how to do it. NVidia was notorious for stomping over system files, hence the RPM Fusion packages rather than getting binary blobs directly from NVidia.
