I think there were a variety of reasons, only some applicable to some
people.  The top ones that spring to mind:

If it's there in the standard repo, it's immediately available without
having to figure out that you needed to add another repo, and how to do
it.

NVidia was notorious for stomping over system files, hence the RPM
Fusion packages rather than getting binary blobs directly from NVidia. 

They were also notorious for dropping support on older hardware,
whereas open-source things can be maintained by /other/ people when the
original person loses interest (or in this case, deliberately abandons
it - just buy a new graphics card from us, it only costs 4 times as
much as your entire PC).
