Now, try adding more not-letters-and-digits to the search string. It won't be long before things stop working again.
$ echo 'j^k' >z $ grep '^k' z [zilch] grep can't find '^k' in a file that clearly contains it.Now, you have to go back to all your scripts and also include the -F option, for this.
$ grep -F '^k' z j^k
