This Geologist 4 position is the science lead for the volcanology program at DGGS, and fully integrated with the multi-agency Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO). This job is focused on collaborative scientific research within AVO, including ongoing development and use of AVO's geologic database, and response to volcanic unrest and eruption. DGGS offers a flexible work schedule and partnership with dedicated colleagues who are passionate about their work and the mission of the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Staff are encouraged to learn and grow through work activities, from each other's experiences, and via structured trainings in technical and scientific topics (e.g. ArcPro, geospatial processing techniques). The incumbent will bring their expertise to work with a highly skilled and dedicated team of volcanologists, geophysicists, programmers, and technicians to improve AVOâ??s ability to provide advance warning of volcanic activity and to better understand volcanic processes in Alaska. On-the-job training for specific technical aspects of AVOâ??s research methods, database development, and monitoring operations will be provided, as well as mandatory aviation safety, wilderness first aid, and firearms training. The incumbent will work closely with USGS and University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) colleagues and students, including access to the USGS tephra lab, and the UAF advanced instrument lab. This position may be located at the DGGS offices in Fairbanks or Anchorage, with potential hybrid telework in-state only; a Fairbanks location is preferred for this position.
