1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 From: Julien Chaput <jchaput82@xxxxxxxxx> The University of Texas at El Paso is offering a PhD position in volcano seismology with a focus on unsupervised learning and clustering of array-based seismic recordings. The position guarantees 3 years of RA funding with anticipated extensions through the multi-institutional NSF grant: *Collaborative Research: CAIG: Unsupervised deep clustering of seismic time series data at volcanoes* The PhD student will be supervised by Dr Julien Chaput and will actively collaborate with teams at Colorado State University and Pacific Northwest National Lab with the goal of developing novel deep learning architectures to cluster continuous data from seismic arrays deployed on volcanoes into behavioral families. Developed architectures will be tested first at Erebus volcano, Antarctica, where databases of event families and multi-scale arrays exist, and will then be generalized to other volcanoes in the Cascades and Aleutian Islands. Prospective candidates must have good communication skills, a strong quantitative background in Physics, Seismology, or Mathematics, and strong coding skills in Python and Matlab. Some knowledge of neural networks, autoencoders, and clustering would be an advantage.
