Dear colleagues,

This message is to inform you that Paris-Saclay University is now opening a
Junior Professor Chair on *Submarine Volcanism* at the GEOPS laboratory.

Please note that deadlines are very tight and application must be
deposited *before
August 22nd. *

Details about the position and application procedure are given below.

This tenure-track position is open to candidates from any country, without
the requirement to speak French (teaching can be given in English).

Please forward this message to your potentially interested young colleagues.

Tenure-track professorship (Junior Professor Chair) n°253102

Laboratory GEOPS at University Paris-Saclay (France)

*Global and societal issues of underwater volcanism*

This position is open for application until *August 22nd 2025*. It is part
of a strategic initiative to strengthen the GEOPS laboratoryâ??s expertise in
submarine volcanology and its dating for risk assessment and societal
issues. Candidates with experience abroad will be appreciated. The
successful candidate will:

â?¢ Develop multidisciplinary research on underwater volcanism, which remains
very little studied, both on the ocean floors and the basal parts of
oceanic volcanoes. The recent initiation of a large eruption in an area
known to be inactive off the coast of Mayotte has highlighted the needs of
the national scientific community to increase the study of underwater
volcanism, its temporal evolution, as well as its role in climate change.
The research related to this CPJ will contribute to the study of the
evolution of oceanic islands and the induced volcanological risks,
including associated tsunamis, by characterizing their underwater activity
(e.g. Antilles, Comoros, Azores, Canary Islands, Mascarenes). The impact of
volcanism on the marine environment, whether through alteration products or
volatiles emitted during eruptive crises, will also be studied. As GEOPS
has developed unique facilities for argon dating, the successful candidate
will benefit of a unique environment to precisely control the timing of
submarine volcanic processes.

â?¢ Develop international research programs by integrating into the
collaborations already in place within the GEOPS laboratory, and by
building his/her own network of international partners. He/She will be able
to rely on the actions implemented by the Graduate School Geosciences and
at the University level. In particular, he/she will be encouraged to apply
to international calls for projects, such as the European ERC programs.

â?¢ Work as a teacher in the Earth Sciences Department of the Faculty of
Sciences of Orsay. He or she will teach in the Bachelor's and Master's
level courses in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Environment (STePE) at the
University of Paris-Saclay. The recruited person must be able to teach, in
lectures, tutorials, and practical work, particularly on topics related to
mineralogy, volcanology, marine geosciences, geochemistry in the teaching
units offered by the two Bachelor's degrees. He or she must also be
motivated by geology teaching in the field and will be a force for
proposing new teaching approaches. He or she will also be involved in
specialized courses of the Master's STePE. The future professor will be in
charge of pedagogical responsibilities for the development and influence of
the training courses of the Earth Sciences Department.

This tenure-track position (gross annual salary: 42,700 â?¬) is for a period
of 3 to 6 years, with the possibility of permanent appointment as a full
tenured professor after a positive evaluation. During this period, only 64
hours per year of teaching are required. Once the tenured professorship is
hold, the teaching load will correspond to the standard 192 hours per year
of the French university system. The tenured professorship comes with a
grant of 200,000 euros, from which 60% will be used for the recruitment of
a doctoral student or a post-doctoral fellow.

*Université Paris-Saclay* was born from the shared ambition of French
universities, grandes écoles and national research organizations. As a
leading university in Europe and the world, it covers the fields of science
and engineering, life sciences and health, and humanities and social
sciences. The universityâ??s science policy closely intertwines research and
innovation, incorporating both basic and applied science to tackle major
societal challenges. Located to the south of Paris, the university extends
across a vast and rich local area. Its location strengthens both its
international visibility and its close ties with its socio-economic
partners. Université Paris-Saclay also appears in the worldâ??s Top 20
universities and as Franceâ??s top university.

*GEOPS (Geosciences Paris-Saclay)* laboratory is made up of 4 teams working
on : (i) geochronology and geomorphology of planetary and volcanic systems,
(ii) the interactions and dynamics of water reservoirs and superficial
rocks, (iii) the movements of continental crust, the evolution of
sedimentary reservoirs and resources, (iv) the study of climate dynamics in
the past.
