2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2-2 From: "Meredith, Elinor (UT-ITC)" <e.s.meredith@xxxxxxxxxx> Dear all, Earlier this month Cities on Volcanoes 13 (COV13), due to be held in Bend, Oregon, USA, in July 2026, was postponed. The IAVCEI Cities and Volcanoes (CAV) Commission fully supports the COV13 Local Organizing Committeeâ??s difficult decision to postpone the conference <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://citiesonvolcanoes.wordpress.com/2025/04/29/postponing-cities-on-volcanoes-13/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dF7dfyoMDtGwIcLvJGRV696gz87N00JjH0MAIcF0-ieRaQgk0sRsWk-dz7KM3XmLSwbeahrEOcl7trH10DR1VvEjvw$>. The CAV commission is retiring the conference number Cities on Volcanoes 13 (COV13) in grateful appreciation of the work the COV13 LOC has achieved to date. We look forward to meeting as a community in Bend when the time is right. We are, of course, saddened that COV13 was postponed, as are many in the volcanology community. In the few short weeks since the announcement was made, we have been humbled by the number of groups that have reached out (over 3!) to offer to host COV13 instead. We take this as a reflection of how much our many communities enjoy and value COV conferences. Having had a front-row seat to the organization of many COV conferences, we appreciate how much work and thought goes into COV conferences. Organizing a COV conference is a major undertaking, and being awarded to host one is an honor. For those who are motivated to host a full COV conference, we will be launching the call to host COV14 next month (target year: 2028), and can answer questions at the IAVCEI Scientific Assembly. CAV2026: Global Volcano Communities For 2026, the CAV commission has decided to promote a series of shorter and smaller events (domestic or regional focus encouraged), in line with the COV conference mission <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://citiesonvolcanoes.wordpress.com/about-us/__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dF7dfyoMDtGwIcLvJGRV696gz87N00JjH0MAIcF0-ieRaQgk0sRsWk-dz7KM3XmLSwbeahrEOcl7trH10DSBmtB5xg$>, which we are calling CAV2026: Global Volcano Communities (individual events will be called *CAV2026: **Brief name***). We envision two different types of events: (1) more traditional gatherings, such as a workshop, field trip, or meeting (no parallel sessions) that are between half a day and three days long, or (2) other events (broadly defined) that exemplify an aspect of the COV conference mission. Our vision is that the *CAV2026: Global Volcano Communities* series will allow more engagement across the world, as attending a COV conference can be too expensive or too far for many to attend. We want to celebrate the local, but with a global flavor (so the option for virtual participation is a plus). Creativity is encouraged. More general information: events that are already planned and are in line with the COV conference mission are welcome, especially if they can be opened up to the wider regional or virtual community. Events should be held in the language(s) that makes the most sense for the target audience. The CAV commission will promote CAV2026 events and provide non-financial support to event organizers as needed and as we are able to. If you are interested in organizing a CAV2026 event, please fill out a brief survey <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://forms.gle/5PThQcn8BQhDJ5vr7__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dF7dfyoMDtGwIcLvJGRV696gz87N00JjH0MAIcF0-ieRaQgk0sRsWk-dz7KM3XmLSwbeahrEOcl7trH10DREFgPHug$> : https://forms.gle/5PThQcn8BQhDJ5vr7 <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.google.com/url?q=https:**Aforms.gle*5PThQcn8BQhDJ5vr7&sa=D&source=docs&ust=1748033108498619&usg=AOvVaw3FBSA59eFsoBuJ6Z4LnxSs__;Ly8v!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dF7dfyoMDtGwIcLvJGRV696gz87N00JjH0MAIcF0-ieRaQgk0sRsWk-dz7KM3XmLSwbeahrEOcl7trH10DRavNoJHg$> by Friday June 13. The CAV commission will be in touch with you the following two weeks, and we will provide a tentative calendar at our commission meeting on July 1 (13:30â??14:10) at the IAVCEI Scientific Assembly. If you have any questions, please get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you.
