Dear volcanophiles,
The Volcanology Infrastructure for Computational Tools and Resources
(VICTOR) team would like to invite you to *participate in a week-long
workshop entitled â??Integrating Field Observations, Remote Sensing, and
Numerical Modeling using VICTORâ?? that will be held on August 11-15, 2025*,
at a newly constructed facility run by the University of South Florida
(USF) near *Mackay, Idaho* (see description below).
This workshop will include a unique combination of field excursions to some
of the many volcanic features in this area, gathering and
utilizing remote-sensing data for these same features, and hands-on
exercises and team projects in modeling volcanic phenomena using the many
tools available on VICTOR. We will also give overview presentations about
cloud computing, remote sensing, and computational methods. An optional
trip to Yellowstone will be offered on August 9-10. This combination will
provide participants with a multifaceted experience which we trust will
promote learning and induce high motivation.
*To register, please fill out the registration form here before April 15*:

*A selection of 20-25 participants will be made soon after the registration
deadline. Funding will cover up to $500 for domestic participants and up to
$1,000 for international participants*. Priority will be given to graduate
students and early-career researchers, as well as volcano observatory staff
members, who are conducting work combining at least two of the three
research topics: field-based, remote sensing and computational tools.

is located at the base of the Lost River Range, one mile outside of Makay,
Idaho. The facility is dedicated to research and teaching, and is used by
undergraduate field courses, graduate courses, and research participants.
It is located only 25 miles from the Eastern Snake River Plain, one of the
worldâ??s best examples of a distributed volcanic field, 35 miles from
Craters of the Moon National Monument, with whom USF maintains a
collaborative research agreement, and is located within the incredibly
varied Challis volcano complex, consisting of arc volcanoes, calderas, and
their deposits. Volcanic features in the area, which can be studied, mapped
and modeled, vary from whole calderas, to hydrothermally altered conduits,
dikes, lava tubes and Holocene lava flows. We often run daily or overnight
field trips to Yellowstone caldera, Henryâ??s Fork caldera, and the late
Pleistocene Blackfoot reservoir volcanic field from the field station. The
location offers excellent opportunities for modeling volcanic deposits
(tephra, pyroclastic density currents), hazards, and processes, such as
volcano-tectonic interaction. The current structure includes six private
bathrooms, kitchen facilities for large groups and dedicated classroom
spaces for computation, mapping, and analysis (e.g., petrography).
Participants will have 24-hour access to this building and its amenities.
The facility is rated to accommodate up to 40 participants at one time. The
field station is open April-November, depending on weather conditions.
Hope that many of you will be able to join us!
Best,
The VICTOR team
