And *of course* I'm on deadline

Got up this morning to many kmail errors. Looked and saw that Proton VPN was down. Tried to restart it, and it was having no part of it. Nor would TDE shutdown. Did the usual alt-f emergency switch to a prompt. Did alt-ctrl-del and got a reboot. Login screen (sddm) as usual. Logged in to TDE. Got usual light blue screen, mouse pointer turned to the red one I use. Then, a while later, came the error box saying that kdesktop had crashed. Still got the startup sound, and top tells me that kicker is running. But no desktop. I forced a reinstall of kdesktop-trinity. No joy. Anybody see this before? Anybody know how to fix it?

TIA.
