Desktop media icon preview turning it off?

Good morning.

Yesterday I had a crash when moving a file icon to a thumb drive while
the previously moved file icons were being deleted. The crash
recovered almost instantly and I haven't seen any repercussions.

Except...

Now when I leave the mouse pointer over a media file icon, it starts
to play it. The media player is not launched, it's just done as a
preview.

I found under "properties > preview" a "play automatically" check box,
which I have unselected. I tried toggling that, but it did not work
to stop the mouse-over preview.

Can someone point me to where to turn this feature off globally?
