Personally, I don't like the name Tonqi at all; I also didn't like the name of
his ancestor, Konqi.
+1, there has to be a better substitue, I could tolerate triad.
While we are at it, I wonder why is his female counterpart is named Katya and
not Tatya (which is also a name)? It seems to me that Tatya would be more
appropriate, and involves fewer mental contortions than the Konqi > Tonqi
business.
Anything can be a name, it just needs to roll off the tongue ok in most
languages.
Also, this female dragon almost seems to be added as an afterthought; even
though, in her description, she seems a much more developed and captivating;
certainly a more interesting character than Konqi / Tonqi.
I will put it out there, then: Why not have a female mascot, and let the
masculine play second fiddle for a change?
To bolster my argument in favor of a female mascot, I would like to adduce
hundreds of literary proofs, going back to the Sumerians, in which the
dragon, in whatever culture, is often actually female, or a pair, female
first, then male. (This is a special subject of study for me, so don't ask
for more proofs unless you really like reading a lot.) Popular notions of
dragons, whether they actually existed, what forms they took, whether they
are actually dinosaurs, etc., are skewed by the influence of fantasy and
science fiction literature.
If it were up to me, I would use some other symbol entirely for our mascot: a
fresh start. Besides, if I am to get even more pedantic about it: 1. Dragons
have spots (sometimes conflated with scales). 2. Dragons are really part
serpent, at least in origin; in many ancient languages, the terms for dragon
and serpent are interchangeable. It reminds me of that Zen Buddhist saying
about "putting legs on a snake" (referring to a specious argument). A dragon
really is just a serpent with legs and other parts added.
Enough of that, though, or this becomes one of those specious arguments. We
are stuck with dragons, I imagine, because it was part of the old KDE3
branding, so we make the best of it we can.
Back to my earlier suggestion, then: rename Katya as Tatya, maybe make her the
primary mascot instead of this other unfortunately named creature. I prefer
Triton over Tonqi, if it comes to that. At least with names, maybe we ought
to consider a fresh start?
And one last bit, just for good measure. I believe, somewhere in those pages,
I found a sorcerer or magician figure; altogether they make up a kind
of "trinity" ... which I consider a lucky accident. I will look again, to
make sure I did not misremember!
I would suggest that we name the magician character "Tim the Enchanter": for
reasons which will be obvious to some, which may take a bit of contemplation
for others, but which I believe will especially suit TDE. Maybe not the whole
bit; maybe just call him Tim?
