My memory is fuzzy, but I think it was when I was running Debian. A process called rpcbind (I think that's correct) seemed to hang on indefinitely, and my system wouldn't shut down. Usually I shut down by command line, but sometimes I use the menu; now when I use the menu, I seem not to have any problems. I don't know if this process was the cause, or only a symptom. I don't have more information, aside from what apt-cache search tells me about it: rpcbind - converts RPC program numbers into universal addresses This was, as I said, a few years ago, several reinstallations and unpgrade. I have since switched to Devuan, but don't know if it helped; I know only that I don't see it any more.
