This is very sad news. I only got to know Fred in 2009 at my first IETF meeting (74).  He was so welcoming and really helped me understand the IETF in my first couple of years.  He spent time with me, helped explain things, and was so very patient.  As I got to know him better, I further realized how incredibly smart and talented he really was.

He was truly a great person who cared, worked hard and added so much to our community.

He will missed.

regards,

Victor K

I was honored to be be able to call Fred a friend and a co-author.  Fred led the IETF while the Internet and the IETF were both experiencing explosive growth.  He reliability showed up.  Always.  Wherever showing up meant.  If you needed help with a spec, he showed up.  If ISOC needed help with the fellows program, he showed up.  If a newcomer needed help, he showed up.  And he did so without ego or undue emotion.

I will miss him.

Dear all,

I just hear the sad news today

Fred, in his multiple roles at the IETF (including IETF chair) and as Cisco Fellow, was a role model for me and a personal mentor.  His Internet contributions are obviously numerous.
For sure, he will be greatly missed.
