Just for clarification: We do not need to be members to use the system.

That is quite true, and in fact my ORCID account includes references to the RFCs I've written, I think collected via DOTs.

On the other hand, if we're using it, the decent thing is to pay. It's not that much and it gives us some interesting options like letting the RPC check and update author info. (With the authors' permission, of course.)
