Thanks.  Unfortunately that doesn't work:

$ autopoint -f
autopoint: *** Missing version: please specify in configure.ac through a line 'AM_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION(x.yy.zz)' the gettext version the package is using
autopoint: *** Stop.

For what are, I suppose, obvious reasons we don't want to tie
ourselves to a fixed version of gettext.  For some reason the upstream
gettext project has always been complete lunacy ...
