Because a lot of git frontends didn't support this properly. We
actually added features to Pagure to support the transition, some of
which aren't present still in other forges. I actually wanted this for
years because I locally maintain git repos of packages that I maintain
or review across multiple distributions, so having distributions use
unique default branch names makes it easier for me to mirror and push
all of them into a single repository.
