Meeting May 13, 2025 at 08:58 CDT Summary

Matthias Clasen inquired about the new Fedora spin for WSL, which Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) reported generally works but currently lacks graphical application support. The discussion then shifted to Neil Gompa (Conan Kudo)'s X11 sessions change proposal, awaiting a Canonical meeting and prompting concerns from Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) about a potentially contentious FESCo discussion due to diverging opinions on default display servers. The accessibility team meeting, initially planned for the following week by Matthias Clasen, will be rescheduled due to conflicts with Red Hat Summit for Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) and Michel Lind.

Details

WSL Fedora Spin

Matthias Clasen inquired about the new Fedora spin for WSL, released with Fedora 42. Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) stated their Windows computer is too old to test it but relayed that it generally works, although graphical applications currently do not. Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) likened it to a container image or toolbox with system integration, and Matthias Clasen noted that graphical application issues might stem from missing packages or detection problems with GTK and Qt.

X11 Sessions Discussion

Matthias Clasen brought up the pending decision on Neil Gompa (Conan Kudo)'s change proposal regarding X11 sessions. The upstream release team is waiting for a Canonical planning meeting, with a follow-up release team meeting scheduled for the next week. Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) mentioned that FESCo would discuss it again this week but they would be absent. Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) requested that someone familiar with GNOME, Wayland, and X11 attend the FESCo meeting to support the proposal and suggested deferral if no champion can attend. Matthias Clasen noted the FESCo meeting time. Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) expressed concern over the Fedora Discourse discussion devolving, with arguments for making X11 the default again despite Wayland's progress. Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) emphasized the increasing burden of maintaining the X11 session with no upstream support and suggested that upstream developers communicate this reality to FESCo. Matthias Clasen agreed to try and attend the FESCo meeting.

Accessibility Team Meeting

Matthias Clasen planned to reach out to accessibility people to schedule a team meeting for the following week, noting that the current week was accessibility awareness focused. However, Michel Lind pointed out that the following week coincides with Red Hat Summit. Neal Gompa (Conan Kudo) confirmed their absence due to speaking at the summit, and Michel Lind would also be attending. Consequently, the accessibility meeting was tentatively rescheduled for two weeks later, and the next week's meeting might be canceled.
