I can't help you with Firefox, but I can suggest an easier alternative. Use the Lynx browser.
With Lynx, once you finish a download, all you have to do is hit the left arrow key
to return to the previous web page. (Or use the h key if lynx is
configured to use vikeys).
Once your cursor is sitting on the book or magazine's download link again, just
tab down (or j key with vikeys) to get to the next document and hit return on your next download selection.
During the lynx download process, you'll have the opportunity to rename
the save file from the esoteric default name to something like short.zip.
