The drives are formatted as RAID1 with BTRFS, so are checksummed and deduped. They are also removable and if one should fail it can be replaced. The caddy is independently powered and is only mounted during backup/restore operations. The number one rule of backups: if it's not automated then it's a problem, not a solution. I use Borg (via Borgmatic) in a nightly script to backup what I care about. I've never lost data in this setup, but of course YMMV.
