Most everything was recovered, but not everything. I was told
that the
stick itself was probably not what failed. There are a few other
more
likely causes of the failure, but I cannot diagnose it. One major
possibility is that the desktop on which I was trying to read it
damaged
some of the contents of the stick.
Was that "desktop" using Windows? Just inserting a USB key in a Windows
system changes something that changes whole drive checksums.
It was windows-10.
I had at least a couple of times on that windows-10 desktop successfully
recovered a few files from the USB-3.0 back-up (produced on the Fedora
desktop). But the last time I tried, windows popped up a message
telling me to run "defender" on the stick. Logged in to the admin
account, I did so. On-screen logging (to the defender gui) during the
process looked way wrong to me, but I no longer remember details. With
ddrescue + off-line help, much of the stick was recovered; but not
everything.
I once forgot to disconnect an USB backup drive when updating Windows.
The update created a Windows partition. overwriting the original
table, so
recovering the data would have been a a big project with no guarantee of
success.
Only view backups read-only (|sudo mount -o ro ...||). Don't leave |
|backup drives connected when not in use.|
