Hi All,
I have been recommending Lenovo's Think Station computer
to customers. But I really do not like how proprietary
they are. Repairing them is impossible after the warranty
period expires as Lenovo is the only source of parts
and Lenovo won't sell you parts.
Anyone have a recommendation for a business grade
computers that use generic parts and are very reliable?
Big manufacturers are moving away from generic parts. Connectors have
always been troublesome. Soldered on RAM reduces problems as long as
the initial configuration was adequate for future needs. Manufacturers have
become very good at designing things that fail shortly after the warranty expires.
Many users prefer smaller form factors, and for large manufacturers small form
factors use less material, reduce shipping costs, and are popular with customers.
Chromebooks and the new Apple Mac mini show where the rest of the industry
would like to go. Going forward, fewer vendors will be selling desktops that use
generic components.
Manufacturers are getting very good at minimizing costs while making systems
last just past end-of-warranty. Fans, external connectors, and keyboards can be
expected to fail soon after the warranty expires, but also electrolytic capacitors and
other electrical components, especially when systems used in hot environments.
I would look for small form factor systems with 5-year warranties and plan to replace
them when they have issues after end-of-warranty. With the current US administration,
delivered prices may vary widely depending on the location of the vendor's plants and
the user.
