The problem I describe here is not seen when running vlc on ubuntu 24.04 laptop, so maybe it is a fedora issue? I use fedora 42 with latest updates applied. I try to listen to a live radio stream. Our national broadcaster (ABC) lists the recommended urls here https://help.abc.net.au/hc/en-us/articles/4402927208079-Where-can-I-find-direct-stream-URLs-for-ABC-Radio-stations I pick a nice one, like https://mediaserviceslive.akamaized.net/hls/live/2038319/abcjazz/index.m3u8 And now run $ cvlc https://mediaserviceslive.akamaized.net/hls/live/2038319/abcjazz/index.m3u8 VLC media player 3.0.21 Vetinari (revision 3.0.21-0-gdd8bfdbabe8) [0000559a0952a070] dummy interface: using the dummy interface module... [00007fad31012b70] adaptive demux: Changing stream format Unknown -> TS [00007fad301bc390] mpeg4audio packetizer: AAC channels: 2 samplerate: 16000 [00007fad31012b70] adaptive demux: Ending demuxer stream. [needrestart] after about 10 seconds it prints [00007fad301bc390] mpeg4audio packetizer: AAC channels: 2 samplerate: 44100 and the playing stops. (*1) If I run vlc (the GUI) I can click 'pause' then 'play' and it will continue indefinitely. Also, if I launch cvlc for any of the two streams listed in the m3u8 then it plays fine. mpv has no issue with this stream either. The same [c]vlc command in ubuntu does NOT show the [needrestart] message. It does pause for a second or two when changing to the 44100 channel but then continues indefinitely. [vlc version 3.0.13-8] I this a vlc issue? A fedora packaging issue? Another part of the audio pipeline? (*1) running vlc many times while drafting this posting, rarely vlc DID resume playing after the 44100 message, stuttering at first but then proceeding to play nicely.
