It did not help back in those days(early 1990) that no one had yet realized the recently mined lead solder they were using inside the dimm packaging had a still radioactive lead isotope(pb-210) in it. After they figured out the packaging itself was slightly radioactive and found solutions to massively reduce that the ECC error rate got much lower.
