You have to pass the fqdn to dig. It will not add suffixes.

What is the suffix used for the local dns?

I am not sure I follow you. "dig" found out the IP address of "bloody" (192.168.1.5). I did not have to add anything.

Also I do not think I am using any suffix. In fact the "domain name" is blank because after all, this is my home lan.

Looking at "Network Setup" on the router webpage I see I have as "Local DNS" 8.8.8.8. Maybe I should have the same address as the router (192.160.1.1)? Could that be it?

It works, but if I try to ping it,

It falis! same thing happens with ssh.

Do you have the domain search list set up to add the suffix for your dns?

Do not think so. 

Under "Network Address Server Settings (DHCP), I see three "Static DNS X) entries (1,2 and 3) and they all have 0.0.0.0

Is that the "domain search list"?

I just work around it by using the ip addresses directly, but I remember it used to work several versions away.

How can I make it work again? I tried to solve it using grok as a helper but could not make it work.
