The better way is: cat /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/local.conf [Seat:*] autologin-user=doug Any time there is a whatever.conf.d directory, this is where your local modifications should live. This allows you to run a default foo.conf, which allows an upgrade to see that it is unchanged and thus allows the update to give the new developers version of that conf.
