The "canonical" way is to use xdg-settings, e.g.:

$ xdg-settings --list
Known properties:
  default-url-scheme-handler Default handler for URL scheme
  default-web-browser           Default web browser
$ xdg-settings get default-web-browser
preferred-web-browser.desktop
$ locate preferred-web-browser.desktop
/home/poc/.local/share/applications/preferred-web-browser.desktop
$ cat /home/poc/.local/share/applications/preferred-web-browser.desktop

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Firefox Web Browser
etc. etc.

See 'xdg-settings help' for more options.

Note that you probably need to set both default-web-browser and
default-url-scheme-handler. You probably have to log out and in again
to have this take effect, but I don't remember.
